The CBSE had announced the results of its Class 12 Board exams on May 13, 2026, hoping to give almost 17 lakh students appearing for the exam some respite. A student who was genuinely assessed in relation to another candidate's response paper and was awarded grades accordingly might have missed out on their favoured university or scholarship, or even faced being incorrectly labelled a failure. Those anticipating 90+ marks who only got under 50 will immediately see the effect on their university applications. The Vedant Shrivastav Case: The Spark That Lit the Fire

The entire scandal came out after Vedant Shrivastav, a Delhi student of Class 12, got extremely low marks in his Physics paper. According to the new post-results guidelines of the CBSE for 2026, students were allowed to get scanned copies of their answer sheets before they could apply for re-evaluation. Vedant, who applied for the scanned copy on May 19, got a rude shock from his results.

In the social media post made by him, he claimed that the handwriting on the Physics answer sheet was not at all similar to his. The sentence structure and writing pattern did not seem to match his writing pattern.

It was made clear that Vedant got evaluated based on another student's answer sheet, which created a big embarrassment for CBSE.

Sanjana's Chemistry Answer Sheet: A Pattern Emerges

Not long after Vedant made his allegation, another student from Delhi named Sanjana filed a similar case. According to her claim, the Chemistry answer booklet put up during the re-evaluation stage was not written by her. While the cover page of the answer booklet bearing her identity was indeed written by her, the inside part of the booklet, which contained answers to the questions, was not.

Jalaj Jain: Scored 47, Expected 90+, Got Someone Else's Sheet

Jalaj Jain, a student, made an account on X where he said that instead of getting above 90 marks in Accounts, he got 47. It turned out that he did not get the right answer sheet when he requested it. His problem was solved neither by contacting the helpline nor the email ID provided by CBSE. It was only when he went personally to the regional office of CBSE in Bhopal that he got his right answer sheet and scored 92/100 marks.

Sunny: Missing Pages in Economics Answer Sheet

Sunny, a student of Delhi, enrolled himself to view his answer sheet of the subject Economics, but noticed that two sheets were missing from it. He approached CBSE through an email, receiving a reply back saying that there is no discrepancy since the scanned version of the sheet was checked. However, it came out that the uploaded booklet skipped from page 17 to page 20, omitting pages 18 and 19 completely.

Scale of the Problem: By the Numbers

The subjects most frequently flagged for unexpectedly low scores and possible mix-ups include Physics and Mathematics.

CBSE's Response: Too Little, Too Late?

Following the quick dissemination of complaints through social media, CBSE released some statements indicating that the CBSE Delhi Student Marksheet Issue of answer sheet mix-ups was being taken "with the highest priority." According to a representative from the board, it was confirmed that the matter was being dealt with by senior members who were calling students and parents to discuss their concerns. The portal for the re-evaluation was expected to be made live on June 1, 2026; however, the deadline was missed, and the portal went live on June 2, 2026, early morning. Soon after its launch, several attacks were registered against the portal by the CBSE cybersecurity teams.

As per the statement issued by CBSE on X on June 2, 2026, the Denial of Service attack had caused more than 1.5 million hits within two minutes, along with an attempt at more than one lakh unauthorised file accesses.

Deadline Extended

Considering the number of complaints received and how difficult it was for students to access the portal, the CBSE decided to extend the last date for applying for verification and re-evaluation. This extension was given till 7th June 2026.

IIT Kanpur and IIT Madras

The magnitude of the crisis compelled the Union Education Minister, Mr Dharmendra Pradhan, to personally step in and get involved in solving this CBSE Delhi Student Marksheet Issue. To do so, he summoned experts from IIT Kanpur and IIT Madras, who would assess the software employed by CBSE to run its OSM network.

Fee Refund Assurance

Following ministerial intervention, CBSE assured students that re-evaluation fees would be fully refunded if their marks were increased after review.

It was recommended to submit all requests for subjects together before tapping “Freeze & Proceed to Payment”, as the information was locked after doing so. The post-result portal provided by CBSE, which went live on June 2, 2026, provided students with three different options:

1. Rushed Implementation Without Adequate Testing

The announcement regarding the launch of the OSM was made by CBSE on February 9, which was only eight days prior to the examination. The little time available did not allow the proper testing of the system, which was meant to scan and grade an estimated 17 lakh answer sheets. There had been a pilot test of just two days in January involving just 100 teachers.

2. Inadequate Teacher Training

This training gap had been noted by GSTA even months prior to the occurrence of the problem. In the lack of qualified training, teachers who were using a new method to assess answer scripts electronically could be prone to errors in evaluation because of pressure.

3. Digital Scanning and Indexing Failures

These complaints are indicative of a failure in the process of scanning and linking these answer sheets to the respective students. The reason why more than one student had answer sheets that did not have answers written by him/her shows that there was a problem somewhere during the digitisation process.

4. Portal Unpreparedness

However, the evaluation portal itself could not come live on time as scheduled, crashed under high volume, and also experienced issues with its payment gateways. Students had difficulties accessing the portal days after their results were released.

What Affected Students Should Do Right Now

As a CBSE Class 12 student of the 2026 batch, in case of any issue regarding your answer sheet or marks, you must consider these actions:

1. Use your Aadhaar Number and Roll Number to log into the CBSE official website, cbse.gov.in.

2. Download a scanned copy of your evaluated answer sheet.

3. Match your own sheet according to the handwriting, the contents, and the structure of the uploaded answer sheet.

4. In case of missing pages, if there is no match in handwriting, or if the answers on the evaluated sheet are not yours, you can apply for "Verification of Issues in Scanned Copy of Answer Book."

5. For any issues, such as wrong evaluation of answers while the sheet is your correct one, apply for "Re-evaluation of Answers," with details about the questions.

6. Include all your subjects and issues in one application before making a final submission.

7. Keep in mind your application number and make sure that you keep records of all communications with CBSE.

8. As a last resort, in case CBSE's online portal does not respond, visit your nearest CBSE Regional Office personally, since many students who visited physically were provided with quick resolution of issues.

Systemic Accountability Is Required

While digitalising educational systems is not only desired but required in today's world, this is certainly not what should happen when an educational board, which decides the future career prospects of 17 lakhs of students every year, adopts changes to its evaluation system in 8 days. What is now desperately required is not only to rectify the current situation but for CBSE to:

• Perform end-to-end system audits before any new deployment.

• Ensure that all evaluators receive structured training.

• Create proper compensatory and corrective measures for the students affected.

• Publish a report outlining the number of students affected and the remedial action taken.
